On December 15, 2009, the City of Arlington seized 26,411 exotic animals from a warehouse in Arlington, TX. The warehouse was being run as an exotic animal importer in an attempt to sell and ship the animals to customers. The goal was to sell the animals as quickly as possible so that no care for the animals would be required. Unfortunately, that was not a realistic business plan. When the COA seized the exotic animals, hundreds were dead or near death because absolutely no care was taken for them. I won't go into detail on the conditions of the warehouse, but it was real bad. Several animal welfare groups stepped in to help seize all of the animals and get them settled into a safe and clean environment to be evaluated and cared for. After lots of hard work and money was spent to care for the exotics, the SPCA of Texas was granted custody of the animals on Feb. 1st and continued their search to find reputable organizations to take all of the animals. The 20,000 plus animals included everything from reptiles, insects, arachnids, crustaceans to many types of mammals. Most of these animals have promising futures with zoos, sanctuaries, or rescue organizations, but a few thousand are still awaiting a permanent home. None of these animals will be available for adoption in fear that they may be put back into the animal trade industry or released into the wild. This rescue cost the City of Arlington and the SPCA of Texas a lot of money as well. I'm just happy to see that doesn't stop organizations like the SPCA from rescuing animals, no matter if they can't make any money back on adoption fees. To read the full article, click here.
