Can Dogs Help Kids Learn To Read?

by Mary

dogreadingbookWhy yes they can!! Literacy specialists have learned that the use of specially trained assistance dogs in helping children who have a hard time reading is actually very successful. Kids that struggle with learning to read often times fall back even more because of the pressure to read aloud to peers, teachers, or tutors. This brings down their self-esteem and can often times affect their other studies.

So, how do dogs play a role in bettering the situation? Well, there is a program called the R.E.A.D  program, which provides trained dogs to schools for kids to read to. Children feel safer and more confident with their reading struggles by reading aloud to dogs rather than people. It takes the stress off the child, the dog is a great listener, and it often reflects in other areas of schoolwork as well.

It doesn't have to be a dog either! Cats, rabbits, and even guinea pigs are a great tool for children with reading disabilities. You might even try this at home if your child is struggling with his/her reading skills. It's also a great way for children to bond with animals!

So, speaking of bonding with animals…. if you are looking for a great Summer camp for your kids this Summer and want to incorporate fun with animals, you should totally look into the SPCA of Texas' Critter Camp!! The camp is offered at both the Dallas TX and McKinney TX shelters.

Here is info on the McKinney Camp:

8411 Stacy Road, McKinney TX 75070

Mon-Fri 9 am – 3 pm

June 14th through August 6th

The cost is $190 per child and you must provide a bagged lunch.

But, the kids get to interact with all the animals there at the shelter, learn about animal rescue, animal cruelty, and how to help out in their own neighborhoods. It's a great way to keep your child occupied this Summer while learning about animals.
